Do you experience constant dryness in the eyes? Have you noticed any changes in the size of your eyes? Did you know that these could be due to thyroid dysfunction?

In this video, Dr. Swathi A. R, consultant at Shekar Eye Hospital, talks about the disease spectrum of Thyroid Orbitopathy or Thyroid Eye Disease.

The thyroid glands are butterfly-shaped glands that are placed at the base of our neck. They secrete certain hormones, which regulate the body's metabolism and other functions. They monitor breathing, heart rate, muscle strength, body temperature, the menstrual cycle, the amount of tears secreted in the eye, and the central nervous system as well.

When T3 and T4 hormones are secreted in excess, it's called hyperthyroidism. Effects of hyperthyroidism include anxiety, excessive sweating, palpitations, sleeplessness, weight loss, hair loss, etc. When the hormones secreted are less in the body, it's called hypothyroidism. In this condition, one experiences lethargy, sleep disturbances, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin, etc.

Thyroid Eye Disease, also known as Graves' Orbitopathy, is an autoimmune condition where the body's defense army starts targeting its tissues. Apart from the thyroid gland, eye muscles and fat tissue around the eyeballs also have receptors for thyroid hormones. The antibodies they produce combine with these receptors, resulting in inflammation and swelling of the tissue around the eye along with swelling of the thyroid gland.
