What is a hernia?
A hernia occurs when an internal organ or other body part protrudes through a weak spot in the muscle or tissue. Most hernias occur within the abdominal cavity, between the chest and the hips. However, a hernia can occur in the upper thigh and groin areas as well. Most hernias are not life-threatening, but they also don't go away on their own. Inguinal and femoral are the most common types of hernias. Surgery is the only treatment for hernia.

Types of Hernia
There are several #types_of_hernia that one can develop. This includes the following:-

1) Inguinal hernia
2) Femoral hernia
3) Umbilical hernia
4) Hiatal (Hiatus) hernia

Apart from these, the other types of hernia include:-

1) Incisional hernia
2) Epigastric hernia
3) Spigelian hernia
4) Diaphragmatic hernia

The symptoms can help you easily understand that you have a hernia and you need treatment, The most common symptoms of a hernia may include the following:-

1) Swelling or bulge in the groin or scrotum
2) Increased pain at the site of the bulge
3) Pain while lifting heavy objects
4) Increase in the bulge size over time
5) A dull aching sensation
6) A sense of feeling full or signs of bowel obstruction

There is no bulge outside of the body in case of a hiatal hernia. The symptoms of hiatal hernia may include heartburn, indigestion, difficulty swallowing, chest pain and frequent regurgitation.

Causes of hernia
A lot of factors contribute to the development of a hernia. Some of the most common causes of hernia may include the following:-

- Muscle weakness and strain
- Genetic factors
- Ageing
- Damage from an injury or surgery
- Strenuous exercise
- Lifting heavyweights
- Chronic coughing
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD)
- Pregnancy, especially having multiple pregnancies
- Chronic constipation
- Overweight or obesity
