What Do Children Need? A Conversation on Ukraine Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Response

The war is taking a heavy toll on children and families. Too many people are experiencing and/or witnessing acts of violence that are unbearable and dehumanizing. It is critical to respond rapidly and adequately, in a manner that reinforces humanity and hope. This conversation will bring internationally recognized MHPSS experts from Ukraine and overseas to discuss what lessons have been learned from previous conflicts, and what might be done to support the mental wellbeing of children and families, and to ensure that we do no harm.

Panelists:
Dr. Lynne Jones, OBE: Dr. Lynne Jones is a child and adolescent psychiatrist, writer, researcher, and relief worker. She has been engaged in assessing mental health needs and establishing and running mental health services in disaster, conflict, and post-conflict settings around the world since 1990.

Prof. Oleg Chaban: Prof. Oleg Chaban is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, Doctor of medical science, head of the medical psychology, psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy department at Bogomolets National Medical University, Kyiv, Ukraine. He is a president of Ukrainian Psychosomatic Medicine Association (UPMA).

Dr. Iryna Frankova: Dr. Iryna Frankova is a clinical psychologist and assistant professor at the medical psychology, psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy department at Bogomolets National Medical University, Kyiv, Ukraine. She is a chair of European College of Neuropsychopharmacology Traumatic Stress Network.

Moderated by Marcio Gagliato: Marcio Gagliato, PhD, is currently supporting UNICEF Poland MHPSS Response to the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis. He has extensive field experience responding to humanitarian emergencies worldwide as a Global Humanitarian Advisor with focus on Mental Health, Protection and Psychosocial Support.
