Coughing is an involuntary reflex. Coughing involves sudden expulsion of air through the large airways.
Generally coughing is a protective reflex: it clears airways from fluids, irritants, foreign particles and microbes.
We will discuss most important types of cough.
Generally, we can classified cough as : Wet and Dry cough
Wet Cough is cough with mucus.
Wet cough characterized by feeling like there’s an object in the back of your throat.
The following conditions can cause a wet cough:
common cold or the flu. Pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, or emphysema. acute bronchitis and Asthma.

Dry Cough:
A dry cough is a cough that doesn’t cause any mucus to come up. It may feel like you have a tickle in your throat. This can trigger your cough reflex and cause hacking coughs.

Examples of dry cough are:
Laryngitis; sore throat; croup; tonsillitis; sinusitis; asthma; allergies
gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Chronic cough caused by asthma is very common.
A dry cough ending with a wheeze or rattle. Asthma cough in many cases are dry. But during recovery period it can become wet.
Can be accompanies with difficulty breathing.
Asthma cough is more noticeable at night or while exercising and exposure to cold air.
Asthma cough commonly accompanied with fatigue, chest tightness and shortness of breath.

COPD - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
COPD cough is chronic, hacking cough. Loud, harsh cough.
at the morning coughing can be more productive, with lots of mucus.
Other symptoms can be: shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, fatigue.
Shortness of breath progress or result of physical activity.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is strongly associated with smoking. In rare cases it can be caused by other pollutants.
Pneumonia:
Cough by pneumonia can begin as a try cough and then becomes wet and purulent.
Phlegm can be yellow, green, and/or red.
Fever, chills and difficulty breathing also common for pneumonia.


Some diseases can be characterized dry, as well as wet cough. For example asthma.
Pneumonia also can start as dry cough, then become as a wet cough.



Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) coughing. Is dry cough. And spasmodic in nature.
GERD is the second most common cause of chronic cough.
GERD cough worse when lying down, or just after eating.
