Published
Susan Tyler Hitchcock is a writer and editor specializing in science, nature, and history. The author of 14 books, she has also written the text for numerous National Geographic photography books, including Joel Sartore’s Photo Ark series. As a senior editor at National Geographic Books, she has edited both narrative and illustrated reference books for the past two decades. Hitchcock has a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Virginia and lives in the Virginia Piedmont forest near Charlottesville.

Acclaimed author Susan Tyler Hitchcock reveals the astonishing wisdom of trees — from their role in the global weather cycle to the remarkable healing properties they have offered to humans over millennia. Interacting with nature — be it a forest, a park, or even indoor plants — contributes to our psychological and physical health. Science has shown that more trees in a person’s environment or daily life make for more creativity, better focus, and a deeper sense of well-being.

Visits with the forest may even alleviate depression because the volatiles from soil and trees have been found to operate similarly to antidepressants. Studies have even found that people heal faster in hospitals when they look out their windows at trees and that urban neighborhoods with trees have fewer crimes.
