The Dark Side of Substance Abuse Treatment

Published
Survivors of childhood sexual abuse may turn to alcohol or other substances to relieve their emotional suffering or to “self-medicate.” Recent clinical studies also support what many working in the fields of substance abuse treatment and working with child abuse survivors have long been aware of — that many women seeking substance abuse treatment report histories of childhood sexual abuse.

People seeking help from substance abuse treatment centers may encounter poorly trained and supervised staff, failure of the facilities to take essential preventative measures, and the facility improperly responding to complaints.

The National Crime Victim Bar Association (NCVBA) hosted this webinar focused on sexual assault and substance abuse treatment
