There are 4 types of dissociation. Dissociation can involve a sense of detachment, and is considered a trauma response and a common symptom of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It can also be a symptom of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Additionally, many people assume all dissociation is part of the mental illness known as dissociative identity disorder (DID), but that is not the case.
