This video explores 6 types of relationships between a mother with Borderline Personality Disorder and an adult daughter or child.

In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), there are 9 symptom criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder, and 5 symptom criteria must be met to create a diagnosis. There can be a wide spectrum of symptoms which present in individuals diagnosed with BPD.

The symptom criteria include frantic efforts to avoid abandonment, unstable relationships, identity disturbance, impulsivity in two areas that are potentially self-damaging, suicidal behavior, affective instability (mood instability), chronic feelings of emptiness, inappropriate or intense anger or difficulty controlling anger, and paranoid ideation or dissociation.

The heart of difficulty in those who struggle with Borderline PD is chronic emotional and relational instability, in addition to other challenging dynamics around impulsivity, identity, mood stability etc. These dynamics, left untreated and unmanaged, are what can make it so difficult for children to feel emotionally safe, and often creates the common Disorganized Attachment experience for children of BPD parents: the very source of safety (the parent) is also the source of fear (the same parent).

Borderline personality disorder is a Cluster B personality disorder and is in the same cluster is Antisocial, Narcissistic, and Histrionic Personality Disorders.

Borderline PD and Narcissistic PD have many differences, but also share many similarities - including splitting (idealization vs devaluation), and many other defense mechanisms. We can see layering between both disorders and it can be somewhat common for individuals with Borderline and Narcissistic traits/disorders to find themselves in relationship with one another.
