Restoring Words: Development of a Speech Neuroprosthesis for Communication with Edward Chang

Speech is one of our most important abilities, and the loss of it through a stroke or other neurological disease can be devastating. UCSF has been the home of groundbreaking work in efforts to restore speech in those who have lost it.

In this week’s Medical Grand Rounds, Edward Chang (professor and chair of our Department of Neurological Surgery) will describe the functional organization of the human motor cortex for speech production and explain the new approaches to restoring communication for people living with paralysis. This work not only holds great promise for the restoration of speech but also adds to our fundamental understanding of how the brain functions and how losses of function might be restored. Dr. Chang and his work were recently profiled in the New York Times. The session is moderated by UCSF Department of Medicine Chair Bob Wachter.
