Preparing for Covid’s Next Phase: Tracking Variants and Enacting Wise Policies for the Future

Published
In this Covid-19 medical grand rounds, we feature two national leaders whose work is shaping our response to the next phase of the pandemic. Caitlin Rivers is a Johns Hopkins epidemiologist who is helping to lead the CDC’s new Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics – designed to monitor the state of Covid and provide early warning of a new variant or future pandemic threat. Zeke Emanuel is an internationally known policy leader who served as a health advisor to both the Obama and Biden administrations. His media appearances, editorials, and white papers have been highly influential in guiding the administration toward a forward-facing Covid strategy. The session will be moderated by Bob Wachter.

Speakers:
Caitlin Rivers, PhD, MPH, is the founding associate director at the Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics at the CDC. She is on loan from Johns Hopkins, where she is an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her work focuses on improving public health preparedness and response, particularly by improving capabilities for “outbreak science” and infectious disease modeling to support public health decision making.

Ezekiel Emanuel, MD, PhD, is vice provost for Global Initiatives, the Diane v.S. Levy and Robert M. Levy University Professor, and co-director of the Health Transformation Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. He has served as special advisor for health policy to the director of the Office of Management and Budget in the White House, chair of the Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health, and a member of the Biden Covid-19 transition team.
