Poor hygiene, traditional beliefs hinder treatment of eye ailments

Poor hygiene, traditional beliefs and poor infrastructure have been named as some of the causes of blindness in the Karamoja region. This, as the country celebrated Sight Day in Moroto district. Dr Gladys Atto an Ophthalmologist at Moroto Regional referral hospital has said that the number of cases of eye problems in the region are many and in spite of the fact that the facility has state of the art equipment to treat this, few patients seek help. According to the Random Assessments of Avoidable Blindness Surveys for 2012-2014 Uganda has an estimated 2.5 million people diagnosed with moderate and severe impairment. The event was held in Moroto district.
