Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a common medical problem, with almost 1 million cases diagnosed annually.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a general term indicating infection of the female upper genital tract and the surrounding structures. It is a common and serious complication of sexually transmitted disease.

The infection generally ascends from the vagina or cervix (cervicitis) to the endometrium (endometritis), then to the fallopian tubes (salpingitis, hydrosalpinx, pyosalpinx), and then to and/or contiguous structures (oophoritis, tubo-ovarian abscess, peritonitis).

It can result from a number of causative organisms:
Common:
Chlamydia trachomatis
Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Polymicrobial infection

Less common
Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Actinomyces spp.

Tests to support the diagnosis of PID:
Vaginal swab test, Urine & blood test, Transvaginal ultrasound scan.
