Leprosy is an ancient disease that has plagued humanity for thousands of years. It is caused by an intracellular obligate bacterial parasite that infects macrophages. This disease causes characteristic skin lesions and nerve cell dysfunction and neuropathic symptoms. This disease can be categorized into separate subtypes, which we describe in this lesson.
