Mucor Black Fungus Disease

Published
Here we will see scenes of many organisms, with the "dominant character" presenting as Mucor sp. This rapidly growing soil borne fungus, is a key organism in the breakdown of organic material within the soil. You can only see part of the fungus in this time_lapse, that part is when the fungus decides to sporulate and very rapidly sends "conidiophores" upwards with a little sphere at the top. This sphere contains hundreds of thousands of spores that will either be consumed by other inhabitants of the soil or proceed to germinate and produce hyphae within the soil and organic matter.

In immunocompromised humans, it is possible for severe disease to result when they become infected with this common organism and the fungus spreads quite rapidly. I was recently brought to the world's attention with the outbreak of SAR CoV2. The disease is known as mucormycosis.

You can read more general information about it here:
https://www.cdc.gov/fungal/diseases/mucormycosis/index.html
However, the internet abounds with scholarly articles on this disease as it is not a new disease and has been known about for some time.

You can find more references here:

https://www.cdc.gov/fungal/diseases/mucormycosis/causes.html

Other organisms which can be seen are: springtails, mites, slime molds and some (out of focus) white colored molds turning a shade of green. These could be of the genus Penicillium (sp?). The green coloration are the spores (not visible at this low magnification).

The very rapidly growing hyphae seen is more than likely not that belonging to Mucor but of some other soil inhabiting fungi.
