In this video, Dr Kirti Sabnis, Consultant Infectious Disease (Fortis Hospital, Mulund), will talk about monkeypox.
Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe. The overall percentage increase in the number of cases of monkeypox in the US or Canada shows that monkeypox is transmitted through unprotected sex. But, these cases don’t clarify that monkeypox is STD. It can also be transmitted through close contact. Close contact such as: sexual contact and taking care of the diseased person. These can be avoided by taking necessary precautions: wearing gloves, mask, cap and gown. Monkeypox and smallpox are very closely related viruses. Before 1978 or 1979 the vaccine for smallpox was compulsory for most of the people. And the person who is vaccinated with smallpox vaccine, automatically gets cross-protection against monkeypox. Common symptoms are: rashes, mouth ulcer, genital area ulcer,fever and body pain.
