Nancy Ball was just weeks away from getting her hip replacement when she received some life-changing news. During her pre-operative workup, her providers found that her white blood count was elevated. She was referred to Dr. Mahsa Mohebtash, a medical oncologist and hematologist and medical director of the MedStar Franklin Square Cancer Center at Loch Raven Campus, who diagnosed her with two hematologic malignancies—more commonly known as blood cancers. Though not curable, her conditions were highly manageable and her doctors where able to stabilize her for hip surgery. Nancy, who is now doing well, shares her experience with WMAR’s Kelly Swoope.
