Welcome to @HealthyKidneyInc! This video is about Medication to Improve Kidney Disease from Natural Professional. This is a trending topic right now in the kidney disease community. Thanks for tuning in.
In this video, we go over a special class of drugs called SGLT2 inhibitors.
These inhibitors are a class of prescription medicines that are FDA-approved for use with diet and exercise to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. Medicines in the SGLT2 inhibitor class include canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, and empagliflozin, and most recently farxiga.
These medications operate by lowering blood sugar by causing the kidneys to excrete sugar from the body through the urine. Because they work on the kidneys, they have shown promise to help with chronic kidney disease as well as diabetes.
These drugs are pills that you generally take once a day before your first meal. This medication is currently very underutilized for chronic kidney disease patients. A lot of doctors are unaware of the efficacy this drug can have on improving kidney disease.
SGLT2 inhibitors are effective at slowing the progression of kidney disease, reducing heart failure, and reducing the chance of kidney failure and death in people with kidney disease and type 2 diabetes. SGLT2 inhibitors also helpp protect the kidneys of people with chronic kidney disease who do not have diabetes.
Some mild side effects have been reported in people using SGLT2 inhibitors, that may include increased frequency of urination, mainly at night, and increaesed thirst.
Consider bringing this medication up with your doctor, and see if you are a candidate for it. There is always new research coming out on chronic kidney disease and treatments and it is important to stay on top of it, as it can help you manage your kidney disease. To your best kidney health everyone.
