How are Medical Reference Apps Changing the Careers of Healthcare Professionals?

Hello everyone! Today lets discuss how medical reference apps can best be utilized by healthcare professionals such as us, clinicians. We’re constantly increasing our use of tablets and smartphones, which has allowed us and our practice to actually move faster and to be more mobile. At least 80 percent o physicians in the United States use some sort of medical reference app on their mobile device. I mean really, haven’t you noticed more iPads around clinics, hospitals? With the transition to EMR, this is only going to increase. So, what are the best apps currently in medical reference? A few of my favorites: Epocrates is an amazing and free drug reference app. It includes everything from doses to calculations. Micromedex is another one of my favorites; it does a ton of drug interactions. I think that’s the pharmacist in me that has converted over to anesthesiologist. Medicode is the free app developed here at NHCPS that sllow you to go through the ACLS, PALS, and BLS algorithms so when you find yourself in these emergency situations you’re not fumbling through your pocket trying to fin your ACLS guidelines card is (or worse yet, if you don’t have it!) it’s all available on the app, which is amazing. There are multiple apps that are out there to assist with prescribing and point of care charting, which allows patients access to their chart on their mobile device. The winner on that is still yet to be discussed, but there is an amazing amount of emphasis on that and only great thins will be happening from that, which is very exciting. So overall, physicians have reported that using medical reference apps have saved them an average of 20 minutes or more everyday, which allows them to provide better healthcare to their patients. So enjoy these apps, and thank you again for saving lives!
