Lip Depigmentation could be two kinds. It could be hyper where the lips become darker. Sometimes they also become lighter. I want to tell you first the causes because the minute we treat the cause or we prevent the cause we get pigmentation coming back to normal. The commonest being smoking. The process of smoking causes heat to generate around the lips and the area where the cigarette comes in contact with the lips. That area sometimes pigments or becomes darker. In many people it also becomes lighter. Prevention of smoking will completely treat this. The second common thing that I see in my practice is lip smacking or licking of lips the minute weather changes and it becomes very dry we start noticing the lips flaking. We resort to two ways of dealing with this, one either we peel the skin or two we start licking our lips, but remember that saliva is a digestive enzyme. So it leads to more dryness and further damage to the skin. This skin then heals with either a dark or a light color. Sometimes even ultraviolet light itself can cause pigmentation of our lips many are medications that we use also cause darkening of our lips. So if any of these are the causes of your lip discoloration, do stop it and you will see a change in the next four to eight weeks as dermatologists we do give certain topical applications to prevent and treat pigmentation. The first is use of a lip balm that has a sunscreen or SPF element in it. It will prevent injury from sunlight or UV light and also hydrate and moisturize your lips. The second thing there are lip balms which contain lightening agents like niacinamide, azaleic acid, you have glycolic acid you also have natural ingredients like mulberry extract and arbutin which then reduce the pigmentation in the long run. So do discuss this with your dermatologist and use this patiently. Don't forget to use your lip balm with the sunscreen and prevent the cause.
