India allows emergency use of Merck's COVID-19 treatment pill, two more local vaccines

India is boosting its arsenal against COVID-19 as part of efforts to contain a possible infection surge driven by the Omicron variant. Merck's treatment pill and two more locally produced vaccines have been given the green light for emergency use. Meanwhile, vaccination rates remain sluggish. Over 60% of Indians have received at least one vaccine dose and 42% are fully vaccinated. Although people continue to line up at vaccine centres in metropolitan cities like New Delhi, the scenario is different in rural areas.
