How to set realistic healthy lifestyle goals - New Day NW

Published
It’s the start of a new year, and many people are working toward positive changes and a healthier lifestyle.

“A healthy lifestyle is really taking the actions and committing to a way of living that promotes health and well-being,” said Dr. John D. Dockins, Chief Bariatric Surgeon and Bariatric Surgery Medical Director at EvergreenHealth Weight Loss and Bariatric Care. “You really want to feel your best physically, mentally and emotionally, and in order to achieve these goals, you really have to set day-to-day tasks.”

To set goals, it’s important to do a self-evaluation of your daily activities and what tweaks you want to make to them. Keep diet, activity level and emotional well-being in mind when evaluating.

“It’s really important to take a look in the mirror and do an overall assessment,” Dr. Dockins said.

Dr. Dockins recommends making SMART goals when thinking long-term. SMART is an acronym for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and within a realistic timeframe to help ensure success.

-S: Specific, which means making a simple, strategic goal and understanding the why behind your goal.
-M: Measurable. You’ll want to be able to track your goal, so perhaps you say you want to lose 10 pounds.
-AR: Your goal should be achievable and relevant. Make sure you’re realistic in setting your goal and that your goal aligns with your schedule.
-T: Give yourself a sensible timeframe to accomplish your goal.

When starting out, several simple lifestyle changes can help you improve your health. These include:

-Striving for at least eight hours of quality sleep every night.
-Moving your body for about 30 minutes each day. Try walking, jogging, yoga, or whatever activity you enjoy.
-Focusing on your diet, including eating plants and protein and knowing generally how many calories you’re consuming.
-Doing something positive for your mental health, like meditation, affirmations, or spending time with friends and family.

“As long as you’re doing something for yourself every day, these good things you’re doing for your life are going to add up over time,” Dr. Dockins said.
