Hope Farms | Teaching, Empowering and Inspiring Healthy Eating in Houston, Texas

Published
Gracie Cavnar was disturbed by data she found two decades ago indicating children in the United States were becoming obese at very young age, developing chronic diseases that typically don’t set in until much later in life.

Hope Farms, a thriving urban farm located in Sunnyside, a neighborhood in Houston, Texas, has become the “ground zero” for promoting the vision and strategic plan Cavnar had in mind when she created the foundation 17 years ago.

Funding is always an issue because beyond farming, the organization does a lot of nonprofit work. “I have skinned up knees from begging for money all the time,” Cavnar jokes.

This is where working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), an office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), has really come through for the urban farm.
