Health and vitality are largely a result of Lifestyle choices that are available to all of us. In this podcast Dr. Breakey will lead us in an exploration of why and how a whole food plant-based lifestyle can help support people of all ages to enjoy a long, healthy, fulfilling and productive life well into their elder years. We will also discuss why the “Standard American Diet”, along with a generally sedentary, stressful lifestyle are the root causes of the most common chronic diseases we see in our health care settings every day. From this understanding also flows the good news: Most of these diseases-- including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, chronic kidney disease, Alzheimer’s, certain cancers and many others -- are nearly always preventable, and, for many of these conditions, commonly reversible. Dr. Robert Breakey is a 5th generation graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his Family Medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin in 1984 and his Board Certification in Lifestyle Medicine in 2019. He has followed a healthy Plant-Based lifestyle himself since 1977 and has practiced Lifestyle Family Medicine in Ann Arbor for 37 years. Since early in medical school he made it his mission to fill in the gaps in his traditional medical education by studying and living all of the pillars of Lifestyle Medicine as the foundational approach to addressing the root cause of the most common diseases seen by health care professionals across America. He has served in many leadership roles including long-term Chairman of the Board for his 950+ provider multi-medical specialty medical group “Integrated Health Associates” (IHA), https://www.ihacares.com/about/about-iha and as a Board member with his affiliated hospital system (SJMHS- Ann Arbor). Also as a Board Member for the Plant Based Prevention of Disease (P-POD) group https://www.preventionofdisease.org/our-team-2022 and Board Chair for the Plant Based Nutrition Support Group, https://www.pbnsg.org/pbnsg-team . In these last 4 years he has been the Medical Director for the IHA William J. Fileti Center for Lifestyle Medicine that is now gaining an excellent reputation as a highly respected evidence-based organization that is generating strong national interest in Lifestyle Medicine among providers and community members. He is an accomplished public speaker and has presented dozens of lectures and seminars on Lifestyle Medicine for both lay and professional audiences over these last 40 years. In his spare time Dr. Breakey enjoys being with his family, skiing, sailing, scuba diving, traveling and watersports.
