Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease GERD FAQs

Published
In this video, Dr. Shashikiran B D discusses some of the most frequently asked questions on GERD.

1. Can GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) be cured without medication and surgery?
Once you have been diagnosed with GERD (which is done with objective tests such as 24 hour pH metry), it cannot be cured without medication and/or surgery. Following the lifestyle modifications can help reduce the acid reflux, but cannot prevent or cure it completely.

2. How long does GERD take to heal?
The oesophageal ulcer needs a month or 2 to heal with proper medical management and simultaneously followed lifestyle modifications. If you go through surgical management, in that case too a month or 2 are required.

3. What happens if you leave GERD untreated? How many years of GERD to cause cancer?
If the GERD is left untreated for a prolonged period of time, Esophagitis or ulceration in esophagus can develop. If this is continued for 10 or 15 years, there are chances of development of cancer in the lower esophagus due to repeated exposure of acid to that region along with ulceration.
