Finding the Source 11/8/2021, featuring Dr. Jim Downs

Published
Join CWI’s Peter Carmichael and Ashley Luskey for a live-streamed discussion with Gettysburg College’s own Professor Jim Downs about his new book, “Maladies of Empire." Downs argues that “the study of infectious disease depended crucially on the unrecognized contributions of non-consenting subjects—conscripted soldiers, enslaved people, and subjects of empire.” Downs will discuss how plantations, slave ships, and the battlefields and field hospitals of the Crimean War and Civil War became the “laboratories in which physicians came to understand the spread of disease” and, for better or worse, advanced medical progress.
