Dr Lynn Jorde describes rare Miller syndrome to medical students and explains the sequencing of genes which found the recessive gene causing Miller syndrome and a different recessive gene causing lung disease, in both Heather and Logan Madsen, both born with both rare diseases. Chances are only 1 in 10 billion that both kids would inherit both of these rare diseases.
Every year Debbie Jorde and her son and daughter, Logan and Heather Madsen, speak to first-year medical students at the University of Utah in Dr. Lynn Jorde's Human Genetics Course. Very enlightening and informative for not only medical students, and medical professionals, but also the general public. More of their story is in Debbie's book, "Eight Fingers and Eight Toes: Accepting Life's Challenges" The theme of the book is: challenges are made easier when one focuses on solutions to problems that can be changed or improved, and accept the problems that one can do nothing about. Learn from real life examples!
