Published
Managing diabetes takes constant work and planning. For those with diabetes, it is important to be extra mindful of infections – which can raise blood sugar. Illness can also lead to dehydration and appetite changes, making diabetes management even harder.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) occurs when cells become starved for energy, and the body responds by breaking down fat stores. This is most common in type 1 diabetes. Symptoms include decreased alertness, dehydration, flushed face, fruity smelling breath, headache and stomach pain. Left untreated, DKA can lead to severe illness or death.
