Coronary heart disease - Treatment, prevention and outcomes (Part 2)

Published
Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia. Five per cent of Australians are living with coronary heart disease, but many Australians often don’t know that they have it until they have a heart attack, which can be fatal.

The management of coronary heart disease depends on the symptoms. Dr John Morgan explains how we treat early-stage coronary heart disease. For some people, coronary heart disease needs to be treated by surgical intervention as it stops them from carrying out their usual tasks with ease, like walking. The RMH Cardiothoracic Surgeon Professor Alistair Royse outlines the surgical options available to treat coronary heart disease such as coronary artery bypass grafting (“Open heart surgery”) and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI).

Fortunately, with some lifestyle changes, coronary heart disease is largely preventable. Dietitian Sarah Phillips explains some of the dietary interventions you can take to prevent coronary heart disease. The RMH Cardiologist Dr John Morgan also outlines the steps you can take to lower your risk of the condition.
