Can we really call the New Testament literature?

Published
There have been reputable objectors to the idea that the New Testament is literature from the beginning. The fact that it is written in Koine Greek is one reason, but it plainly does not observe the Classical standards of rhetoric.

Since the Enlightenment period, the suggestion that the Apostles were illiterate fishermen was also commonplace. Recent scholarship demonstrates the exceptionally high rates of literacy in second Temple Judaism, but there are still many objections to the idea that the New Testament should be read as a literary document.

While the primary purpose is clearly religious, I will defend literary readings and answer some of the objections.
