Unemployment Update California EDD News Release. PUA unemployment claims need to send in proof of employment. Yes, even though PUA benefits have ended you need to do this or else you risk getting an overpayment notice and may be asked to pay back all of your federal unemployment benefits including the $300 boost. I’ll cover why the CA EDD is asking for this information, the acceptable documents for proof of employment, self employment, had a job offer but couldn’t start or didn’t have enough W2 wages to qualify for a regular unemployment claim and were placed on PUA.

The EDD will send out notices by email, text and to your UI Online account as well as mailing a follow up notice starting November 10th.

Almost everyone who received PUA unemployment benefits in California will need to send in this information. The only PUA claims that will not need to do this are: Claimants that began collecting benefits in 2020 and already provided proof of income to get a higher weekly benefit amount. Everyone receiving the PUA minimum weekly benefit amount of $167 is going to need to supply this information.

Here is partial list of acceptable documents to prove proof of employment: business licenses, tax returns, business receipts or invoices, W2, paystub, signed affidavits verifying self-employment, contracts or agreements, bank statements from a business account that show self-employment, written business plans or lease agreement, letters offering employment, statements or affidavits verifying an employment offer (with the employer’s name and contact information)

* I think everyone should be able to get ahold of the CA EDD for free, I still advocate calling (833) 978-2511 the best days to call the EDD are Tuesday through Saturday, the best times to call the EDD are right when they open at 8:00 to 8:15 or later in the afternoon around 2:30 - 4:00.
