One of the rhythms you'll need to know as a nurse is asystole. Let's break down the word. The prefix "a" means without, and "systole" means contraction. Therefore, this means there is no contraction taking place within the heart.

As a result, asystole presents with no ECG waveform. Instead, you will see a flat line, as there is no contraction from the atria or ventricles.

Watch the video to learn more about the causes and treatment of asystole.
