Animal vs plant protein in Chronic kidney disease (CKD)

Published
When it comes to kidney disease, does the protein source matter?

Well, in a study in AJCN back in 2008, they looked at two types of protein sources. One was animal source and the other one was coming from whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy.

And what they showed was the more protein that people consume from animal sources, the more likely they were to spill protein in the urine, which is basically a sign of kidney disease.

On the flip side, if they were to change and get most of their protein intake from things like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, they would actually see a 20% decline in the protein they were spilling in the urine.

So at the end of the day, a whole foods plant-based diet is ideal for patients with kidney disease.
