Dr. rer. nat. Corinna Keup:

"It’s very exciting working in the age of "personalized medicine." I always ask my students:: "Are you aware that we’re now in the age of personalized medicine? And that you can actually treat your patients with personalized medicine?"

It’s extraordinary for me because personalized medicine doesn’t just mean giving the same drug to each patient with the same disease – because then only a few will benefit from it. Instead, we want to characterize the disease in oncology, the tumor itself, very specifically, and then carry out the appropriate treatment accordingly.

The field is really developing quickly. Personalized medicine cannot only be used in breast cancer diagnostics to choose a suitable treatment, but it can also help monitor that treatment.

Personalized medicine will affect all of us – we’ll all be patients to a certain extent – and it’ll benefit all of us. There are many more "biomarkers" that are currently being added. And you can’t only limit yourself to the DNA level, you also need to analyze mRNA or RNA, microRNA. And speaking of this, I’d also like to mention "Liquid Biospy", which is my field of research. It’s about determining the genetic material from bodily fluids, and not from the tumor tissue. The advantage is that we can take blood samples during the treatment, or other bodily fluids, urine or saliva for example, and decide during treatment, or following up, what the molecular changes are.
