Amyloidosis is a serious illness caused by the buildup of a protein called amyloid in the organs. This protein can accumulate in various parts of the body like the heart, liver, spleen, brain, kidneys, and digestive system, leading to the malfunction of these organs. Mostly men are affected by this disease and people with infections or chronic inflammation are at higher risk. Some types of amyloidosis can be caused by long-term kidney dialysis, but with advancements in dialysis techniques, this risk is reduced.
