Abby Kawula shares her story of surviving heart disease

Published
February 4th, 2022 is National Wear Red Day. It's part of American Heart Month to raise awareness about heart disease. Heart survivor Abby Kawula has been partnering with the American Heart Association to spread awareness of heart disease. She joined Rachel Manek on Good Day Wisconsin to talk about her diagnosis when she was a baby to her most recent accomplishments.

Abby was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect when she was 8 weeks old, she had an ASD (atrial septal defect) which is basically a hole in the heart which did not close after birth. She had open heart surgery at age 4 and, according to her mom, she "is doing amazing."

Doctors will continue to monitor Abby her entire life, but her only limitation is no full-contact sports. Abby is a dancer and spends as much time as she can advocating for heart health and volunteering for the American Heart Association.
