Our text (Revelation 2: 12-17) is a letter that was sent to the church at Pergamos which is described as a worldly church. This is the third church to which John sends a message. Pergamos was a center of religion. There were many temples to different false Gods, but God chose to establish a true church. However, Satan had ideas of his own. Perhaps he thought he could destroy the church from within. Worldliness will certainly destroy a church.
The city of Pergamos had little or no commerce, but was noted for its institutions of learning. It was a city of refinement, and science, especially medicine. Ephesus and Smyrna were evil and wicked cities of idolatry, but Pergamos was even worse. It was known as “Satan’s throne,” and also as the place “where Satan dwelleth.”
The Christian as well as all churches are here warned about the dangers of worldliness in one’s life as well as in the church. We can learn to deal with worldliness by considering the facts that are given to us and which are clearly presented in our text. We will look at three today.

3. The Manifestation
