I'm sure you've heard the old saying, "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." But if we're being honest, it's really lunch. And if we're being REALLY honest, it's really dinner.
What about that post-workout meal? It might be as important as breakfast and lunch combined!
If you're looking to get the most out of your workout, it's important to fuel your body correctly. Eating the wrong foods before a workout can lead to stomach cramps, nausea, and an upset stomach.
In order to avoid these unpleasant side effects, it's best to eat a light meal with protein and
carbohydrates about an hour or even two hours before starting your workout. This will give you enough energy for a full workout without feeling too full or bloated.
There are some foods you should never eat before a workout. And if you're looking to create a healthy and nutritious post-workout meal, then this list of 12 foods to NEVER eat before a workout is for you:
1. Green Veggies
Though green veggies are rich in iron, calcium and other important mineral as well as vitamins, they are not recommended to be eaten before exercise because they have indigestible carbs that can cause gas as well bloating when working out.
2. Energy Drinks
Before working out you should keep away from high amount of sugar as this will increase your blood sugar levels and may lead to fainting when working out.
3. Flavoured Water
Like I said before, anything that contains high amount of sugar should be avoided. Flavoured water are made artificial sweeteners which lead to indigestion and comfortableness while in the gym.
4. Boiled Eggs
Though boiled eggs are rich in protein, they don’t have enough carbs for more energy. More still, they take long to be digested which makes them something you should avoid before working out.
5.Spicy Foods
spicy foods can cause heart burn which may be uncomfortable while working out.
6. Dairy products
Dairy products like milk, yogurt as well as cheese tend to make you dull and also lazy while working out. More still, high protein consumption without enough carbs will just drain your energy faster and get tired fast. It is advisable to at least consume protein 2 hours before and after workout.
7. Fiber rich food.
Fiber rich foods like wholegrain bread, whole-wheat pasta and oats take long to be digested in the body and therefore with inactive stomach during workout, you are most likely to get digestion problems and
discomfort.
8. Avocados
Avocados contain fiber and mono-saturated fat which can be hard to be digested by stomach and therefore you should keep away from it before working out.
9. Alcohol
Alcohol is dehydrating yet you will be sweating already and loosing water from your body and
therefore adding a glass of wine or alcohol will make you even loose more water during your workout.
10. Sugary Foods: Sugar can cause a spike in blood sugar levels and make it hard for your body to use the sugar as energy, which will result in an insulin overload and increased fat storage.
11. Fruits: The fructose found in fruits can cause an insulin overload as well as digestive issues, such as gas and bloating, which may inhibit your performance during the workout.
12. Whole Grains: Whole grains are high in carbs and can cause an insulin spike, which may lead to low energy levels during the workout.
