TOXICOLOGY

A STUDY OF EFFECTS OF POISONS ON LIVING ORGANISMS
FORENSIC toxicology deals with medico-legal aspects of toxic effects of drugs and chemicals in man.
Introduction To Toxicology

Principals of Toxicology

TOXICOLOGY
Toxicum = Poison (Latin)
Toxicom = Arrow Poison (Greek)
Logia = Science or Study

TOXICOLOGY
“Toxicology is the study of poison on living organism”

It also includes the lethal dose and its fatal results and various remedies and measures to combat their effects.”

HISTORY
Mathieu Joseph Bonaventure Orfila (1787-1853)
Was a Spanish Toxicologist and Chemist
Often called the “Father of Toxicology” was the first great 19th century exponent of Forensic Medicine.
He was the founder of the Science of Toxicology.
He put the base of “Forensic Toxicology”
Orfila worked to make Chemical Analysis a routine part of forensic medicine and made studies of Asphyxiation, the Decomposition of Bones and Exhumation.
Orfila discovered detecting arsenic in solutions if not in the human body.
.He published the first scientific treatise on the detection of poisons and their effects on animals.
This was the work that established “Forensic Toxicology” as a legitimate science endeavor.
He wrote first book in 1815
.He stressed legal implications
